Meta Ads (Facebook and Instagram) can be one of the highest-return channels for a small business โ or one of the fastest ways to burn a monthly budget on likes that never turn into customers. The difference is almost entirely in the approach, not the platform.
Start with the pixel, not the ad
Before you spend a rupee on a campaign, make sure Meta's tracking pixel is installed and firing correctly on your website โ every page view, every add-to-cart, every form submission. Without accurate tracking, Meta's algorithm is optimizing blind, and you'll never know which creative actually drove a sale.
Warm audiences beat cold audiences, almost always
Retargeting people who already visited your website or engaged with your page converts at a fraction of the cost of reaching total strangers. Before scaling cold-audience campaigns, make sure you're running a retargeting campaign to everyone who's shown interest in the last 30 days.
Creative is the targeting now
Meta's algorithm has gotten so good at finding the right audience that your creative choices matter more than your manual targeting settings. Ads that look native to the feed โ casual video, real people, real results โ consistently outperform polished studio photography.
Quick win: film one 15-second phone video of a real customer or a real result. It will likely outperform your best studio photo ad.
Budget: test small, scale winners
Run 3-4 creative variations at a modest daily budget for 4-5 days before judging performance โ Meta's algorithm needs time to leave the "learning phase." Once a clear winner emerges, shift budget to it rather than spreading thin across everything indefinitely.
The three campaign types worth running
For most small businesses, three campaign objectives cover it: Leads (form-fill or message), Traffic to a booking page, and Retargeting to warm audiences. Skip "Engagement" and "Awareness" objectives unless brand-building is genuinely the goal โ they optimize for likes and views, not customers.
What "good" looks like for a small business
Cost-per-lead varies wildly by industry, so don't chase an arbitrary number from a blog post โ including this one. Track your actual cost-per-booked-customer over a full month before deciding a campaign isn't working; the first week's numbers are rarely the real story.
Meta rewards businesses that treat it as a relationship channel, not a billboard. Show up consistently, retarget the people who already noticed you, and let the creative do the targeting.
