If your business depends on customers finding you nearby โ a clinic, a salon, a repair shop, a restaurant โ local SEO isn't optional. It's the difference between showing up when someone searches "dentist near me" and being invisible while a competitor three streets away gets the call.
Here are the ten tactics we run for every local client, in the order we actually do them.
1. Claim and fully complete your Google Business Profile
This is the single highest-leverage thing you can do. Fill in every field โ categories, services, hours, attributes, products. Google rewards completeness with visibility, and an unfinished profile is the fastest way to lose the map pack to a competitor who bothered to finish theirs.
2. Get your NAP consistent everywhere
Name, Address, Phone must match exactly across your website, your Google Business Profile, and every directory you're listed on. A mismatched suite number or an old phone number on one directory quietly erodes the trust signals Google uses to rank local businesses.
3. Build a review engine, not a review wish
Ask every happy customer, right after the good moment โ not weeks later over a generic email blast. Both volume and recency matter to Google's local algorithm, and a steady trickle of fresh reviews outperforms a pile of old ones.
Quick win: set up a simple post-service SMS or email asking for a review โ response rates drop by more than half after 48 hours, so timing beats wording.
4. Create a real, unique page for each location
Thin, templated location pages don't rank โ Google can tell when a page is just a city name swapped into a generic template. Each location page needs specific, honest local content: what makes that neighbourhood's customers different, what you actually offer there, real landmarks and context.
5. Get local backlinks that actually matter
A link from your city's chamber of commerce or a local news mention carries far more local-ranking weight than ten generic directory submissions. Sponsor a local event, get quoted in local press, or partner with a nearby complementary business for a mutual mention.
6. Answer the questions people actually ask
Use the Q&A section on your Google Business Profile proactively โ post the questions customers commonly ask and answer them yourself before someone else posts a wrong answer.
7. Geo-tag your images
Photos with location data embedded give Google another local-relevance signal. It's a small thing, but small things compound โ pair it with descriptive file names instead of "IMG_4821.jpg".
8. Target service-area keywords, not just city names
"Emergency plumber" alone won't cut it โ "emergency plumber open now" and "same-day AC repair" match how people actually search when they're ready to book, not just researching.
9. Keep your hours brutally accurate
Wrong hours during a holiday or a one-off closure is one of the fastest ways to lose a customer's trust โ and Google increasingly surfaces "hours may differ" warnings that make people bounce to a competitor instead.
10. Review your rankings monthly, not once a year
Local search results shift constantly as competitors update their own profiles. A monthly check of your map-pack position for your top five search terms tells you whether what you're doing is working โ or whether it's time to adjust.
Run all ten consistently for 90 days and most local businesses see a measurable lift in map-pack visibility and call volume. None of this is exotic โ it's disciplined, and that's exactly why most competitors don't bother doing all of it.
