Most small businesses running Google Ads are losing money in the same handful of places โ not because the platform is broken, but because nobody's cleaned house in months. Here's the 30-day fix, in the order it actually pays off.
Week 1: Audit your search terms report first
Before you touch bids or budgets, open the Search Terms report and read every single query that triggered your ads over the last 30 days. This is the single most revealing document in your account โ it shows you exactly what Google decided was "close enough" to your keywords, and it's usually full of surprises.
Fix your negative keyword list
Every irrelevant query from that report becomes a negative keyword. "Free," "jobs," "DIY," "how to" โ these show up constantly in service-business accounts and burn budget on people who were never going to buy. A thorough negative list, reviewed weekly for the first month, is the fastest lever you have.
Match types are quietly burning budget
Broad match without smart bidding discipline is where accounts bleed the most. If you're running broad match, make sure Target CPA or Target ROAS is actually doing its job โ check the "optimization score" suggestions critically, since not all of them serve your goals, only Google's.
Quick win: sort your search terms report by cost, descending. The top 10-15 rows usually reveal most of your wasted spend in under five minutes.
Week 2: Landing pages are half the battle
A great ad sending traffic to a slow, generic homepage is money burned on the way to a bounce. Every campaign should land on a page that matches the ad's promise exactly โ same offer, same language, one clear next step.
Week 3: Dayparting โ stop paying for hours that never convert
Pull up your conversion data by hour of day. Most local service businesses see a sharp drop-off overnight and on certain days โ yet many accounts run 24/7 by default. Scheduling ads to your actual buying hours can cut wasted spend without touching a single bid.
Week 4: Put a hard stop on "Maximize Clicks"
This bidding strategy is designed to spend your budget, not to get you customers. If your account is still on it after the first month, switch to Maximize Conversions or Target CPA once you have enough conversion data โ usually 15-30 conversions in the lookback window.
None of this requires a bigger budget โ it requires cleaning up the same budget you already have. Most accounts we audit find 20-40% of spend going somewhere it shouldn't. Thirty days of discipline usually finds it.
